mythology meme:  [8/8] myths, legends, and stories
↳ chang’e flies to the moon

On Mid-Autumn day, the fifteenth day of the eight lunar month in the Chinese calendar, during a full moon, open-air altars are set out for the moon goddess Chang’e. There are several legends explaining how and why she became the moon goddess, and one of them reads as follows:
A long time ago, there were ten suns burning in the skies, and people died of thirst and hunger all the time, for there was no relief. However, a hero named Hou Yi was sent down by the King of Heaven to help. With his red bow and white arrows, Hou Yi shot down nine of the ten suns and the world was saved.
One day, Hou Yi met a lovely young woman named Chang’e. They fell in love and married soon after, but because Hou Yi was immortal and Chang’e was not, Hou Yi grew worried. He went to the Western Queen Mother high in the Kunlun Mountains and as a gift for all his good deeds she gave him a small vial of the elixir of life. The couple decided to drink the elixir together on the fifteenth day of the eight lunar month, when there was a full moon. However, a wicked man named Feng Meng was bent on becoming immortal himself and while the full moon was rising and Hou Yi was out hunting, Feng Meng killed him. Feng Meng went to his home to demand the elixir from Chang’e, but before he could do anything, she drank every last drop of it. Chang’e rushed to her husband’s body and wept, all the while feeling the elixir working its magic in her body. Soon she felt herself being lifted up towards the heavens; she decided to live on the Moon to be close to Earth, and never forgot her love for Hou Yi and humanity.
